MUMIAS, Kenya – Police in Mumias East have arrested two suspects believed to be behind a large-scale M-Pesa fraud operation, recovering thousands of SIM cards and dozens of national ID cards in the process.
The suspects, identified as 30-year-old Jonathan Ambwaya Kwini and 23-year-old Timothy Siloche Wesonga, were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation at Bomani Teachers’ Estate in Mumias town.
Authorities say the operation followed a tip-off that led officers to the hideout where the duo allegedly ran an elaborate SIM card registration and fraud scheme.
During the raid, police recovered a Safaricom Mobicom device used for registering SIM cards, four Itel phones, 70 Airtel SIM cards, 24 Telkom SIM cards, and more than 5,000 Safaricom SIM cards.

Officers also seized 142 national ID cards belonging to different individuals, which police believe were being used to facilitate fraudulent transactions.
Police described the recovery as a major breakthrough in the fight against financial crime in the region.
The two suspects were taken to Kakamega Police Station, where they are being held ahead of a court appearance scheduled for Monday.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has urged members of the public to continue sharing information on suspicious activities, assuring that whistleblowers’ identities will remain confidential.
