MANCHESTER, U.K. – Bryan Mbeumo has officially joined Manchester United from Brentford in a deal worth an initial £65 million, bringing an end to one of this summer’s longest transfer sagas.

The 25-year-old Cameroon international signed a five-year contract with an option for an additional year and becomes United’s third major signing under manager Ruben Amorim.

United’s pursuit of Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League last season, began in early June with a £55 million bid.

Two failed offers later, the Red Devils finally reached an agreement with Brentford for a package that could rise to £71 million with add-ons.

Speaking after the move, Mbeumo said: “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take it. This is the club of my dreams — the one whose shirt I wore growing up.”

The winger added: “I know I have the character and drive to push myself further here. Playing under Ruben Amorim and alongside world-class players will help me reach another level. We’re all determined to fight for the biggest trophies.”

Mbeumo arrives at Old Trafford on the back of a stellar campaign with Brentford, where he spent six seasons, making 242 appearances, scoring 70 goals and delivering 51 assists.

His form made him one of the Premier League’s most productive forwards, with only Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak boasting a higher shot conversion rate last season.

United’s Director of Football Jason Wilcox praised the signing, calling Mbeumo “a perfect fit” for the club’s vision. “His consistency and attacking output speak for themselves. His determination to be part of our project confirmed that he belongs here.”

The player will wear the number 19 shirt and is expected to join United’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Brentford, meanwhile, confirmed that Mbeumo’s departure is the club’s record sale, surpassing Ivan Toney’s £40 million move to Al-Ahli in 2024.

Bees Director of Football Phil Giles said the club was proud to see Mbeumo take the next step in his career.

“Bryan came to us as a teenager, and watching him grow into one of the Premier League’s top attackers has been a privilege. He’s earned this move.”

Behind the Deal: A Lengthy Negotiation

Sources indicate that Brentford were initially reluctant to sell to Manchester United and had hoped to receive a higher fee from rival suitors Tottenham or Newcastle.

Negotiations became strained when United refused to meet Brentford’s £70 million asking price.

However, with Mbeumo eager for the move and United’s persistence, a deal was finally struck.

The transfer represents a significant statement of intent for United, who finished a disappointing 15th last season.

With Mbeumo and earlier signing Matheus Cunha onboard, Ruben Amorim now has two of his top summer targets in place as he looks to rebuild the squad.

United’s focus will now shift to other ongoing negotiations before the September 1 transfer deadline, including resolving the futures of several fringe players and replacing Marcus Rashford, whose move to Barcelona is reportedly close to completion.

For now, however, United can celebrate landing one of the league’s most dynamic attackers — a player entering his peak and eager to deliver silverware at Old Trafford.
