NAIROBI, Kenya — Apple has released a rare software update for the iPhone 5s, a model first launched in 2013, under iOS 12.5.8.
The update is designed for legacy iPhones that no longer support newer iOS versions, ensuring continuity of critical services such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation.
While it does not bring new features, the update renews software security certificates that underpin Apple’s communication and activation services. Without it, these certificates could expire, potentially disrupting key phone functions.
Apple confirmed that the update extends service functionality beyond January 2027, preventing older devices from becoming partially unusable.
For users relying on the iPhone 5s as a secondary or entry-level device, the update allows continued use without the immediate need for an upgrade.
Unusual longevity for a legacy device
The iPhone 5s is now more than 12 years old, making this update highly unusual in a smartphone industry where most devices stop receiving software support after three to five years.
Apple generally offers major iOS updates for five to seven years, with limited security updates thereafter.
The decision to release iOS 12.5.8 underscores Apple’s reputation for long-term device support, even for models long discontinued.
The update also applies to other older iPhones running iOS 12, including the iPhone 6, extending basic service functionality across Apple’s legacy lineup.
Apple emphasised that the update focuses on stability and service continuity rather than performance improvements or new features.
Users should not expect changes to the interface or functionality beyond ensuring that existing services remain reliable.

To install the update, users can navigate to Settings → General → Software Update and are advised to back up their data before updating, especially on older hardware.
Significance in markets like Kenya
In markets such as Kenya, where older iPhones remain widely used due to cost considerations, the update is particularly meaningful.
Many users continue to rely on older Apple devices for essential communication, business, and personal use.
By extending support, Apple helps these users remain connected without immediate pressure to purchase newer, more expensive models.
The update also aligns with Apple’s sustainability goals. Keeping older devices functional for longer reduces electronic waste and encourages users to maximise the lifespan of their hardware.
While Apple has not confirmed whether further updates will follow, the iOS 12.5.8 release ensures that the iPhone 5s remains usable far beyond typical smartphone expectations.
