Applications Open for Prestigious Chevening Scholarships as UK Seeks Kenya’s Future Leaders

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The British High Commission in Nairobi has announced the opening of applications for the 2025/2026 Chevening Scholarships, inviting ambitious and visionary Kenyans to compete for the UK’s flagship global scholarship programme.

The call targets individuals with a strong commitment to leadership and a realistic plan to drive positive change in their communities and across Kenya.

The application window runs from August 6 to October 7, 2025, with successful applicants set to join one of over 150 leading UK universities for a fully funded one-year master’s degree.

Since its inception in 1983, the Chevening Scholarship programme has supported over 60,000 professionals worldwide.

In Kenya, more than 650 scholars have benefitted, going on to take up influential roles in government, law, media, technology, policy, and finance.

This year alone, 30 Kenyan students are currently studying in the UK, while another 30 are expected to depart in September.

A spokesperson for the British High Commission urged Kenyans from all counties and backgrounds to apply:

“If you are passionate about driving change — whether locally or globally — and want to be the best at what you do, then Chevening is for you. We’re calling on Kenyans with bold ideas and leadership potential to apply and join this growing network of change-makers.”

The programme offers more than academic funding — scholars gain access to exclusive cultural, professional, and networking experiences in the UK and globally.

One of the current scholars, Lydia Matata, is pursuing an MA in Directing Film and Television at Bournemouth University.

“It was a huge adjustment — both culturally and environmentally — but an experience I’ll carry with me for a lifetime,” she said. “From making deeply impactful films to seeing Beyoncé live and dancing to jazz in Hackney — this journey has been nothing short of transformative.”

Chevening is funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and various partner organizations.

This year, Prudential Insurance is sponsoring one Kenyan scholar, expanding access to the programme.

Applications must be submitted through www.chevening.org/apply. More information on eligibility and guidance is also available on the site.

Prospective scholars are encouraged to follow #ChosenForChevening and #MyCheveningJourney on social media for updates and stories from current and former recipients.
