AU Chairperson Congratulates Samia Suluhu on Election Victory

Date:

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The African Union (AU) has congratulated Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election, while expressing regret over the loss of lives during post-election unrest.

In a statement issued on Saturday, AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commended the people of Tanzania for participating in the democratic process and congratulated President Samia on her victory.

Youssouf extended condolences to families who lost loved ones during the violence that followed the announcement of results, urging all parties to uphold peace and the rule of law.

“The Chairperson deeply regrets the loss of human life during the post-electoral protests and extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims,” the AU statement said.

He emphasized the need to protect human rights, political freedoms, and peaceful assembly, calling on Tanzanian authorities to respect citizens’ rights within the law.

The AU chairperson also reminded all stakeholders of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, which underscores respect for human rights, the rule of law, and political pluralism as the foundation of stable societies.

Reaffirming the bloc’s commitment to working with Tanzania, Youssouf said the African Union stands ready to support the government and its people in efforts to promote peace, national unity, and democracy.
