DPP Secures Landmark 50-Year Sentence in Bomet Drug Trafficking Case

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured a landmark conviction in its fight against drug trafficking, with a Bomet court handing down a 50-year prison sentence and a Sh50 million fine against Bernard Miyeiende Kerongo.

The ruling was delivered by Senior Principal Magistrate Stephen Onjoro at the Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court in Bomet, following Kerongo’s conviction for trafficking narcotic drugs along key transit routes.

Kerongo was intercepted on 22 March 2024 at approximately 5:55 p.m. in Mulot town along the Bomet–Narok highway.

Authorities found ten sacks of cannabis weighing 278 kilograms, valued at Sh8.34 million, concealed in a Toyota Noah (registration KBZ 667Z).

The court ordered that, in addition to the 50-year prison term, Kerongo must pay a fine of Sh 50 million, or, in default, serve an additional five years in jail.

The prosecution was led by Ayekha Augustine, whose presentation of evidence was pivotal in securing the conviction.

The DPP described the sentencing as a significant milestone in dismantling narcotics networks operating in Kenya and reaffirmed the State’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and related organised crime.
