Catholic Church Shuts Down Kerio Valley Mission Over Insecurity

Date:

KERIO VALLEY, Kenya – The Catholic Church has closed all its missionary operations in Kerio Valley, including the Chesongoch Mission Hospital, citing worsening insecurity in the region.

In a statement released by the Missionary Benedictine Sisters, the church said the decision follows last week’s killing of Father Allois Bett by suspected bandits.

The hospital, which employed over 100 staff and served thousands of residents, is among the facilities affected.

“There has been high tension of insecurity causing mental, emotional, and psychological trauma to our sisters,” read the statement signed by Sister Rosa Pascal, head of the mission.

The sisters said rising unrest has forced staff to flee, making it impossible to maintain essential services.

The closure is immediate and indefinite, aimed at ensuring the safety of missionaries, employees, and visitors.

Sister Pascal also said the move is intended to press the government for a lasting peace solution, including civilian disarmament.

She added the closure should prompt reflection within the local community on the mission’s value.

Father Bett, who served at St. Mulumba Parish near Tot, was ambushed and fatally shot while returning from a community mass.

His death has fueled fears that non-locals are being targeted.

He will be buried on Tuesday at Ol Lessos Parish in Nandi County.
