Celebrated journalist Charles Mghenyi, a 35-year-old father of two, has thrown himself into Mombasa politics—and his entry is already causing fear among the city’s political dynasties.
Born in Maweni, Nyali, Mghenyi has watched Mombasa’s leadership remain the preserve of a few powerful families. Now, he says, enough is enough.
“We shall not sit down and watch as leaders get imposed on us. That must end,” he told The Scoop.
Armed with integrity and a message of hope, he is banking on Mombasa’s restless youth.
With over 140,000 new youth voters anticipated to register, he believes young people want leaders who “look like them and talk like them.”
He rejects the politics of handouts, insisting he is “not a wash wash or a thief” but a servant of the people.
Mghenyi’s campaign banks on the youth vote.
“Nobody is asking me for handouts. They know I am a person of integrity—I have not stolen anything, I am not a wash wash,” he says.
