NAIROBI, Kenya – The Government of Kenya has officially submitted its Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 2031-2035) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), proudly meeting the submission deadline of April 30, 2025.
This submission underscores Kenya’s strong commitment to global climate action, reinforcing its leadership in climate change initiatives despite mounting global uncertainties.
The NDC, developed through a comprehensive and inclusive process, highlights Kenya’s vision for a climate-resilient society and outlines bold strategies for mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage.
These actions aim to ensure that the country’s livelihoods, infrastructure, and ecosystems thrive amid the challenges posed by climate change.
Key Commitments and Highlights of Kenya’s NDC 2031-2035
- A Climate-Resilient Vision
Kenya’s NDC envisions a nation where socio-economic sectors, communities, and ecosystems can thrive despite the ongoing and future impacts of climate change. The plan focuses on adaptation measures and strategies for loss and damage, aiming to build resilience at all levels of society. - Mitigation Ambition
Kenya has set an ambitious target to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 35% by 2035, compared to the Business As Usual (BAU) projection. This commitment translates into an emissions reduction of 75.25 million tons of CO2 equivalent (MtCO2eq) by 2035, contributing significantly to the global effort to limit global warming. - Implementation Criteria
To achieve this ambitious target, Kenya plans to mobilize domestic resources for 20% of the emissions reductions while seeking international support, including finance, technology transfer, and capacity building, as well as participation in carbon markets to achieve the remaining 80%. - Investment Requirements
The implementation of this NDC will require an estimated USD 56 billion for mitigation and adaptation actions across sectors from 2023 to 2035. Of this amount, Kenya plans to mobilize approximately USD 10.5 billion (19% of the total) from domestic sources over the 13-year period. - Catalysts for Growth
The NDC’s implementation is expected to be a catalyst for transformative economic development, fostering innovation and inclusive growth across key sectors of the Kenyan economy. It will play a pivotal role in driving sustainable development while addressing climate change. - Alignment with Long-Term Development Goals
Kenya’s NDC aligns with the goals of Kenya Vision 2030, and once the country’s Long-Term Development Vision is finalized, the NDC will be revised to ensure continued alignment with the nation’s broader development objectives.
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, reiterated the country’s leadership in global climate action and called upon the international community to support Kenya’s bold climate agenda.
The submission of the NDC 2031-2035 marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to address the challenges of climate change while fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development.
Kenya’s proactive approach showcases the country’s determination to lead by example and support international climate goals.
