CS Murkomen Calls for Urgent Measures to Curb Gender-Based Violence in Taita Taveta

Date:

TAITA TAVETA, Kenya – The Ministry of Interior has raised a red flag over the alarming increase in gender-based violence (GBV) incidents in Taita Taveta County.

Speaking during the final leg of the Jukwaa la Usalama security baraza in Taveta, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen highlighted the growing concerns, noting that reported cases of GBV in the region span a range of disturbing incidents, from rape to early forced marriages.

Murkomen emphasized the urgent need to address the cultural practices and behaviors that perpetuate gender violence in Taita Taveta.

He called for community-wide efforts to change mindsets and implement protective measures for women and girls in the area.

“The rise in gender-based violence is a serious concern, and we must address the cultural factors that contribute to these harmful practices,” Murkomen stated.

The alarming trend comes at a time when the Ministry of Interior is focusing on tackling various security challenges in the coastal region.

Over the course of a week-long series of security barazas held in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Tana River, and Taita Taveta counties, a range of critical issues were raised by local residents.

Among these concerns were the growing insecurity caused by youth gangs, land disputes, and high school dropout rates, all of which contribute to the region’s ongoing security challenges.

Murkomen assured residents that the Ministry is committed to addressing these issues, with a particular emphasis on the protection of vulnerable groups, including women and children.

The ongoing dialogue through the security barazas, he added, will help inform future policies and interventions aimed at improving safety and addressing the root causes of violence in these communities.
