KAJIADO, Kenya – Kenya is fully prepared to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with the government rolling out robust security and logistical measures to ensure the safety of fans, players, and visiting dignitaries.
Speaking ahead of the tournament’s kick-off this weekend, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assured Kenyans and international visitors that the country is ready to deliver a seamless and secure continental football spectacle.
“We are this weekend going to host CHAN, which will help us prepare for AFCON 2027. This is a historic moment for Kenya,” said the CS, speaking in Kajiado County during his 24th Jukwaa La Usalama consultative forum.
Full Security Infrastructure Deployed
Murkomen announced that Kenya has implemented an advanced security architecture across key CHAN venues—Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums—including:
- Round-the-clock surveillance via modern CCTV systems
- Enhanced police patrols and deployment of tourist police
- Emergency services on standby, including ambulances
- Thorough screening to prevent access by unauthorized or armed individuals
“The Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo have conducted final inspections, and we’re satisfied that the facilities are fully ready,” said Murkomen.
Special Travel and Immigration Measures in Place
To facilitate smooth cross-border movement of fans and teams between co-hosts Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the government has also rolled out a special travel pass to fast-track clearance at immigration points.
Dedicated immigration desks have been set up at major airports and border crossings, and online ticketing has been introduced to minimize congestion at stadium entrances.
“We encourage fans to arrive early to avoid long queues and possible stampedes. Digital ticketing will ease access and ensure safety,” added the CS.
Murkomen clarified that visa requirements have been waived for most regional visitors, with only a few exceptions, such as travelers from some Caribbean nations, who will be facilitated through diplomatic arrangements.
Call to Rally Behind Harambee Stars
The CS urged Kenyans to show up in large numbers to support Harambee Stars as they make their CHAN debut against DR Congo on Sunday at Kasarani Stadium.
He was joined at the briefing by Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, IG of Police Douglas Kanja, and several elected leaders, underscoring national support for the month-long tournament.
“Let us use this opportunity to not only showcase our preparedness but also rally behind our boys as they fly the Kenyan flag on home soil,” said Murkomen.
