ELGEYO MARAKWET, Kenya – Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a heartfelt plea to parents and guardians to prioritize the well-being of children’s minds and souls, warning that failing to do so could lead to regret in the future.
Speaking during a Sunday visit to Elgeyo Marakwet, Murkomen urged those entrusted with the care of young people to be mindful of the content children are exposed to, emphasizing that bad influences can have long-lasting destructive effects.
“All of us given responsibility to take care of our young people, let us be mindful of what they consume—not just material things like money or infrastructure,” Murkomen said. “What they consume, mentally and spiritually, will shape their futures, and if it’s not right, it could destroy them. It is crucial that we sow good seeds.”
His remarks came at a time when concerns over youth behavior are mounting.
The CS stressed that parents will suffer the consequences if their children are not properly guided in their formative years.
“We must nurture our children’s minds with wisdom, for if we fail, we will bear the pain later,” Murkomen added. “The security of our nation depends on how well we guide the next generation.”
Murkomen’s call follows a recent incident involving Butere Girls High School students, who protested after the arrest of their Drama club director, Cleophas Malala.
The tense situation escalated to the point where police had to use tear gas to disperse the students.
This unrest highlighted the fragile state of youth behavior, with some attributing the unrest to negative influences from certain individuals within their circle.
In the same vein, President William Ruto, who accompanied Murkomen to the African Inland Church in Kapng’etik, Keiyo South, reiterated the importance of safeguarding children from those seeking to corrupt them.
Ruto expressed concern over individuals who attempt to sow hatred between children and their parents, teachers, and leaders.
“We must protect our children from people who want to influence them to hate those who care for them, be it parents, teachers, or leaders,” Ruto stated. “Additionally, we must shield them from dangerous influences, including pedophiles and drug dealers.”
The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to providing the best educational support for Kenyan children, urging parents to actively support their children’s passions, whether in sports, arts, or academics.
