CS Murkomen Warns Corrupt Police Officers: ‘No Excuse for Bribe-Taking’

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has warned that police officers engaging in corruption will face decisive action, particularly those in the traffic department and other high-contact units.

Speaking on Friday, Murkomen said officers tarnishing the image of the National Police Service (NPS) will be held accountable, dismissing poor working conditions as an excuse for unethical conduct.

“Those who applied for this job understood that it comes with hardship. They accepted the conditions, including deployment to operational areas,” the CS said.

His remarks come in response to a recent Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) report ranking the police as the most corrupt institution in the country.

“Little salary is not a licence to engage in corrupt activities like collecting bribes. It’s about the character of the individual officer. I will not allow a few to damage the image of the service,” he added.

Murkomen also addressed concerns over recent reports of abductions and missing persons, saying the cases remain under active investigation.

“We are yet to establish the status of these matters. Investigations will reveal whether these people were abducted or they abducted themselves,” he said, adding that inquiry files on missing persons are still open.

“The facts will be established, and we will act accordingly,” Murkomen stated.
