NAIROBI, Kenya — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested one suspect and seized containers of suspected methanol following an intelligence-led operation along the Nairobi–Thika Highway.
The operation, conducted at about 4:00 a.m. in the Gwa Kairu area near Spur Mall, led to the interception of a grey Toyota Fortuner. The driver, identified as Thomas Ochieng Wamura, was arrested at the scene.
According to the DCI, a search of the vehicle uncovered multiple containers believed to contain methanol, concealed within the car.
Detectives also recovered two mobile phones, which have been taken in as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.
The suspect is currently being held at Muthaiga Police Station pending completion of investigations and arraignment in court. Meanwhile, the vehicle and the recovered substances have been secured at DCI headquarters for forensic analysis to confirm the nature of the chemicals.
Methanol, a highly toxic industrial chemical, is sometimes illegally used in the production of illicit alcoholic drinks, posing serious public health risks.
Authorities have in the past linked its misuse to fatal cases of alcohol poisoning across the country.
The DCI said the operation forms part of a broader crackdown on illegal substances and illicit trade networks. “We remain committed to disrupting drug trafficking and related criminal enterprises through sustained intelligence-led enforcement operations,” the agency said in a statement.

The arrest comes amid heightened enforcement efforts targeting the distribution of hazardous substances, particularly those linked to the manufacture of illicit brews, which have previously resulted in loss of life and serious injuries.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities expected to pursue further leads to establish the source, intended use, and possible distribution network linked to the seized consignment.
