Ex-Nyandarua Governor, Five Others Await Verdict in Sh50 Million Corruption Case

Date:

NYAHURURU, Kenya – Former Nyandarua County Governor Daniel Waithaka and five former county officials will learn their fate on March 13, 2025, when the Anti-Corruption Court in Nyahururu delivers its ruling in a Sh50 million graft case.

The case, which has been ongoing for years, took a significant turn after the court determined that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to warrant the defense’s response.

This decision placed Waithaka and his co-accused—Grace Wanjiru Gitonga, Martin Igecha Kamami, John Ngigi Daniel, Jesse Wachira Mwangi, and Simo Irungu—on trial for corruption-related offenses.

The six are accused of violating the Public Procurement and Disposal Act of 2006 by illegally engaging Israeli firm M/S Tahal Consulting Engineers without a proper procurement plan during the 2013/2014 financial year.

Prosecutors argue that they unlawfully awarded the contract through direct procurement without prior written approval or justification from the Nyandarua County government.

In addition to irregular procurement, the former governor and his team face abuse of office charges over their alleged failure to follow established procedures in awarding the KSh 50 million contract.

The upcoming judgment will be closely watched as a test of accountability in county governance.

If found guilty, the accused could face hefty fines, jail terms, or both, under Kenya’s anti-corruption laws.
