NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati on Friday appeared before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of public funds during his tenure.
The ex-Governor is accused of awarding road construction contracts worth Sh70 million to companies with direct links to him and his five brothers between the 2017/18 and 2021/22 financial years.
Wangamati, who had been summoned by the EACC to clarify his involvement in the controversial tenders, recorded a statement at the commission’s regional offices in Bungoma.
The investigation stems from allegations that the former governor misused his office to steer public contracts to businesses tied to his family, thus bypassing proper procurement processes.
“The investigation will determine the appropriate legal steps to take, including potential criminal charges against any individuals found responsible and measures to recover the misappropriated funds,” an EACC said in a statement.
In a related development, Webuye West Member of Parliament Daniel Wanyama, also implicated in the investigation, provided his statement to EACC officials in Nairobi on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
His involvement in the case further intensifies scrutiny over the handling of county resources during Wangamati’s administration.
