World Cup winner Juan Mata will continue his career in Australia after signing with Melbourne Victory for the 2025/26 A-League season.
The 37-year-old midfielder joins from Western Sydney Wanderers, where he managed one goal and three assists across 22 appearances last season, largely as an impact substitute.
“I am driven and motivated to help this team win trophies and to work with the club as part of a longer-term plan to strengthen football in the country,” Mata said upon his unveiling on Tuesday.
Mata, who initially moved to Australia in 2024 on a 12-month deal with Sydney-based Wanderers after a stint with Japan’s Vissel Kobe, will now line up for Victory as they seek to reclaim domestic silverware.
Glittering Career
The Spaniard boasts one of football’s most decorated résumés. He was part of Spain’s golden generation that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship.
Victory officials hope his experience and playmaking skills will inspire the squad both on and off the pitch as the A-League enters a new season.
At club level, Mata lifted the Champions League and FA Cup with Chelsea in 2012, as well as the Europa League with both Chelsea and Manchester United.
