Samburu, Kenya– A multi-agency security operation in Samburu County has resulted in the seizure of cannabis sativa worth an estimated Sh1.88 million, following a swift response to a tip-off from vigilant members of the public.
The narcotics were intercepted near the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River after locals reported seeing a suspicious white Toyota Probox, without visible registration plates, traveling from Isiolo towards Marsabit.
Witnesses alerted authorities after spotting several armed individuals unloading suspicious luggage from the vehicle in the area.
Responding promptly, a coordinated team comprising officers from Archers Post Police Station, National Police Reservists (NPR), and Samburu National Reserve rangers launched an operation to investigate.
Gunfire Exchange as Suspects Flee
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers encountered suspects who were in the process of pushing luggage toward the river. In a dramatic turn, the individuals opened fire on the approaching security personnel. A brief exchange of gunfire ensued before the suspects fled into nearby thickets, managing to evade capture.
Despite their escape, the officers scoured the surrounding area and recovered two green sacks left behind by the suspects. The sacks contained multiple yellow and grey cello-taped packages suspected to be cannabis.
Weighing a total of 62.65 kilograms, the seized consignment carries a street value of Sh1,879,500, authorities confirmed.
Evidence Secured, Manhunt Underway
The drugs have been taken in as evidence as police intensify their manhunt for the armed suspects. Security forces believe the syndicate behind the consignment is part of a larger network trafficking narcotics through northern Kenya.
The National Police Service (NPS) has since urged the public to assist in tracking down the suspects.
“We appeal to anyone with information about the suspects or their location to report to the nearest police station or security agency,” the NPS said in a statement.
Crackdown on Drug Trafficking Intensifies
The Samburu incident is the latest in a string of operations aimed at dismantling drug trafficking rings operating across the country.
Recent weeks have seen multiple arrests in Kilifi and Nairobi, where suspects were found in possession of narcotics and illicit brews, some with intent to traffic.
The Ministry of Interior and the NPS have pledged to continue their nationwide crackdown on drug abuse, especially in light of rising cases among youth and vulnerable communities.
“This operation underscores our commitment to protect Kenyan society from the harmful grip of drugs. We thank the public for their vigilance and encourage continued cooperation,” the NPS added.
