NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was administered a harmful chemical during an alleged abduction that left him unable to speak.
Gachagua, who spoke at Karen Hospital on Monday, May 26, said doctors informed the MP’s family that the loss of voice was due to a chemical substance allegedly injected into his body.
Koimburi is currently admitted at the facility in stable condition.
“He was abducted in full view of church members by a squad that also attempted to harm his wife,” Gachagua said. “He was found badly beaten and tortured in a coffee plantation in Kibichoi. Doctors say the injuries appear to be professionally inflicted.”
According to the former DP, Koimburi is only able to communicate by writing and is under close medical supervision.
He added that doctors suspect the chemical—reportedly administered through inhalation—damaged the MP’s vocal cords but expressed optimism about his recovery.
Koimburi, a close ally of Gachagua, was discovered on Monday morning in the Jacaranda coffee plantation in Githunguri, Kiambu County, nearly 12 hours after he was reported missing by his family.
However, police have cast doubt on the abduction claims, with investigators suggesting that the MP may have staged the incident.
Authorities are conducting forensic tests on samples collected from the scene and the MP’s body to determine what happened.
One officer linked the case to a land dispute under active investigation.
Quick recovery Hon. George Koimburi.
According to police, an attempt was made to arrest Koimburi last Friday after an event in Juja, but he fled on a motorcycle accompanied by a security officer.
His driver was later detained and questioned at DCI headquarters.
“Since then, his phone was off until reports emerged on Sunday that he had been abducted or arrested,” the officer said.
A police team has since visited the church where Koimburi was last seen, the coffee plantation where he was found, and the two hospitals where he received treatment.
