NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to bring those responsible for the deadly violence in Narok County to justice, labeling the events as a “crime against humanity.”
The violence, which erupted on Monday in Angara Barikoi over a land dispute, left five people dead and sparked a fierce confrontation between police and local residents.
Gachagua condemned the “brutal force” used on innocent civilians, questioning the orders given to police officers, including the deployment of the General Service Unit (GSU) and Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) officers.
“This forceful displacement of population is a crime against humanity, and whoever is culpable must face crimes against humanity,” Gachagua said in a statement late Monday. “I am gathering evidence and information on this matter, and we will name and shame those responsible for this heinous act.”
Gachagua expressed his shock and anger over the shootings, asking who was behind the “shoot-to-kill” orders that led to the deaths of innocent people.

He also criticized the violence toward women and children, saying it reflected a deepening crisis in the country’s governance and respect for human rights.
The violence stemmed from a land dispute, with local residents asserting historical ownership of the 6,000-acre piece of land.
Tensions escalated when residents blocked roads to prevent land officials from surveying the area.
The standoff quickly turned violent, with clashes erupting between the protesters and police.
Several police and land officials’ vehicles were set on fire during the unrest.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, in response to the violence, vowed that legal action would be taken against those found responsible.
He assured the public that no one, regardless of their position, would be spared from prosecution.
“Calm has been restored, but we will ensure those who incited the violence are brought to justice. We will not stop at anything, and it will not matter the position one is holding,” Murkomen said.
