Gaming Operators Criticize Government’s Blanket Ban on Gambling Ads, Call for Dialogue

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Association of Gaming Operators-Kenya (AGOK) has voiced opposition to the government’s recent blanket ban on all gambling advertisements, arguing that it unfairly penalizes licensed and tax-compliant firms while failing to address illegal operators.

The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) suspended all gambling advertisements across media platforms for 30 days, citing concerns over the proliferation of gambling activities and the misrepresentation of gambling as a legitimate means to wealth creation.

The ban, which took effect on April 29, was justified by BCLB Chairperson Jane Mwikali, who highlighted the negative socioeconomic impacts of misleading gambling promotions.

However, AGOK believes the decision harms compliant businesses that have invested in responsible gaming initiatives.

In a statement dated April 30, the association criticized the “blanket” approach, pointing out that it disproportionately affects legitimate, tax-paying firms, while illegal and offshore operators continue to operate without consequence.

AGOK has called for a structured dialogue with BCLB, the multi-agency enforcement team, and other stakeholders to establish balanced advertising guidelines that promote responsible gaming without hindering lawful business operations.

The association has also voiced support for the development of clear and transparent advertising standards, co-created with industry and regulatory bodies, to ensure responsible marketing practices.

Additionally, AGOK is working on expanding its nationwide responsible gaming campaign, in collaboration with BCLB, psychologists, and media partners.

The association has urged the government to focus on identifying and eliminating illegal gambling platforms that target Kenyan consumers.

“We remain committed to responsible gaming, fair taxation, and ongoing collaboration with both the government and the public to foster a safer, more ethical gaming environment,” AGOK stated.

The formation of a Multi-Agency Enforcement Team is a key step in advancing these goals, ensuring that all stakeholders work together toward a more transparent and ethical gambling landscape in Kenya.
