Gloria Orwoba Released on Sh10,000 Bail After Dramatic Arrest Outside Parliament

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former nominated senator Gloria Orwoba has been released on a Sh10,000 police cash bail following her arrest outside Parliament Buildings in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Police said Orwoba was processed at Central Police Station and released pending possible arraignment, with charges of creating disturbances and obstruction of justice being prepared.

“She was released pending the possibility of being arraigned with obstruction of justice and creating disturbances,” Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda confirmed, adding that the Sh10,000 cash bail was deemed sufficient for the alleged offences.

Earlier, a video captured outside Parliament showed Orwoba attempting to access the Senate chambers but being blocked by security officers.

She protested the move, insisting she was legally entitled to return to her role as senator after a tribunal ruling reinstated her.

“I am here to go back to work as per the court’s instructions and judgments that came out. I have my badge and everything… I am just coming to work,” she said, accusing Senate security of defying a lawful order.

Orwoba had on August 20 won a case before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), which nullified her expulsion from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The tribunal ruled that UDA’s disciplinary process breached principles of fairness and natural justice, saying she had not been given a fair hearing or furnished with the decision to expel her.

Despite the tribunal’s decision, security officers at Parliament barred her entry, prompting the confrontation that led to her arrest.

Orwoba maintains she remains the sitting nominated senator for UDA until a court rules otherwise, dismissing allegations of disloyalty as politically motivated.

Her case has once again exposed simmering political wrangles within the ruling party and highlighted ongoing tensions between party disciplinary actions and judicial oversight.
