NAIROBI, Kenya – Google has unveiled a new feature that allows users to edit videos stored in Google Drive directly through its AI-powered platform, Google Vids, eliminating the need for third-party tools or separate uploads.
The update, which began rolling out this week to Workspace users worldwide, introduces a one-click “Open with Vids” shortcut in the Drive preview window.
Once clicked, the video opens in Google Vids, giving users instant access to advanced editing capabilities powered by generative AI.
“No more exporting files, launching separate apps, or uploading content to third-party platforms,” Google said in a statement. “With just one click from Drive, users can instantly access advanced editing tools, making on-the-fly video edits as easy as editing a document in Google Docs.”
Google Vids, launched in 2024, blends traditional editing tools with AI-driven features aimed at simplifying storytelling.
These include text-to-video generation, automated scene arrangement, scriptwriting assistance, AI-generated voiceovers, and smart effects like music, transitions, and overlays.
Angela Ruiz, Director of Product at Google Workspace, said the goal is to democratize video creation:
“This is not just about editing—it’s about enabling smarter storytelling. We’ve reimagined the creative process for video, making it accessible to everyone, regardless of their editing experience.”
The feature is initially being deployed to business and education users, with administrators able to control access at the organizational level. Google said broader availability will follow in phases.
