NAIROBI, Kenya– The Treasury seeks to allocate Sh3.1 billion to accelerate the development of the Konza Data Centre and Smart City Facilities in the 2025/26 Financial Year.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi argues that this is part of the government’s initiative to bolster the growth in the digital superhighway.
“In order to fast-track the development of the Konza Technopolis City, I have proposed an allocation of Sh3.1 billion for Konza Data Centre and Smart City Facilities,” Mbadi stated.
The Konza National Data Center, the largest in Kenya and East Africa, is a flagship component of the Konza Technopolis a visionary smart city and technology hub project by the government.
The facility boasts a storage capacity of 1.6 Petabytes and is classified as a Tier III data center, offering secure, reliable cloud computing services for both government and private enterprises.
It also hosts the Konza Cloud, a key driver of digital transformation and e-governance initiatives across the country.
Other significant allocations include Sh 2.3 billion for the construction of the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology at Konza Technopolis, Sh 3.7 billion for the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project, and Sh 333.2 million for Government Shared Services.
Additionally, the budget proposes Sh382 million for the enhancement of the digital superhighway, Sh689 million for the establishment of digital hubs across the country, and Sh750 million for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the National Optic Fiber Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI).
According to Treasury, these investments underscore the government’s commitment to positioning Kenya as a regional leader in ICT infrastructure, digital innovation, and smart city development through the Konza Technopolis initiative.
