NAIROBI, Kenya – The government has increased miraa prices in response to changing market trends, Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe announced on Saturday.
Under the new pricing structure, a kilogram of Grade 1 miraa will now cost Ksh.1,300, up from Ksh.700.
Grade 2 Miraa will now cost Ksh.700, up from Ksh.350, while Alele Miraa will cost Ksh.1,000, up from Ksh.500.
The new prices were negotiated during a Thursday meeting between Ministry of Agriculture officials, miraa farmers and traders, and the Miraa Pricing Formula Committee.
The committee is mandated to guide miraa pricing by reviewing factors such as production data, supply and demand, and cost of production.
According to the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), the miraa sector generates Ksh.13 billion annually in revenue.
Kenya exports miraa to Somalia, Israel, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), making it a key cash crop for farmers, especially in Meru County.
