IEBC Secures Funding, Assures Kenyans of Smooth November By-Elections

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has moved to calm fears of possible delays in the upcoming by-elections, announcing that it has secured full funding from the National Treasury.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon Edung on Saturday confirmed that the commission had received the resources it required to conduct the polls set for 27 November 2025.

“We would like to assure the country and citizens that all preparations are in top gear, and the resources we needed to conduct successful by-elections are now available to us,” said Edung.

The announcement comes after weeks of uncertainty over budgetary shortfalls, which had sparked concerns about whether the electoral body would be ready for the contests.

According to Edung, the hurdles were resolved after “candid and fruitful discussions” with Treasury officials. “There is no reason whatsoever why we should not have by-elections as planned,” he added.

The IEBC boss further pointed to ongoing engagements with political parties through the Political Parties Liaison Committee and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

He said the discussions have touched on the commission’s preparedness not only for the November polls, but also for the 2027 general elections and continuous voter registration.

As part of preparations, the commission will roll out a voter registration and civic education campaign on 29 September 2025 to raise public awareness ahead of both the by-elections and future polls.

Edung stressed that the IEBC remains committed to delivering credible, transparent, and timely elections, assuring Kenyans that all systems are now in place.
