NAIROBI, Kenya – What started as a solemn memorial march by Gen Z protesters marking the anniversary of Kenya’s deadly June 25, 2024, demonstrations has escalated into chaos, injuries, and a brutal déjà vu.
Several protesters were reportedly shot during Wednesday’s anti-government rallies in Nairobi, with disturbing scenes of bloodied youth wheeled into Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) surfacing just after noon.
The same generation that flooded the streets one year ago to oppose the 2024 Finance Bill was once again under siege—this time while honoring those who died for their right to protest.
It’s still unclear how many were officially admitted, but sources say more injured individuals are being treated in other city hospitals. The number could rise as street clashes continue.
Wednesday’s protests drew thousands into the Nairobi Central Business District, and across towns like Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Homa Bay, and Makueni.
Coordinated online and propelled by youth-led organizing, the demonstrations remained largely peaceful—until they weren’t.
In a striking moment, even former Chief Justice David Maraga—who joined the protesters and marched alongside them—was teargassed.
Maraga had earlier described this movement as Kenya’s “third liberation,” comparing it to the country’s struggles against colonial rule and dictatorship.
The same streets that saw bloodshed a year ago were once again stained with fresh trauma.
This protest wasn’t just about remembering the past—it was a living, breathing reminder that the very rights the youth are fighting for remain under attack.
And once again, they are demanding to be heard.
