On Sunday, September 28, 2025, a remarkable display of community solidarity unfolded in Othaya as thousands of Kenyans gathered to support Kaluma Boy, a TikTok creator known for documenting his journey of caring for his ailing father. The event, which attracted a diverse crowd from across the country, highlighted the power of digital platforms in mobilizing resources and fostering unity among Kenyans.
Kaluma Boy, whose real name is Kaluma, gained national attention by sharing his experiences of caring for his father, who suffered a stroke in August 2024 and was in a coma for three months. In his videos, Kaluma detailed the challenges of providing home care, including the need for regular catheter changes and expensive neurological medications. He also highlighted the costs associated with physical therapy sessions, which can amount to KSh1,000 per day. His heartfelt portrayal of these struggles resonated with many, prompting a wave of support from across the country.

In response to Kaluma’s appeal, Kenyans initiated a fundraising campaign to assist with his father’s medical expenses. A paybill number was set up to collect donations, and the campaign quickly gained traction on social media platforms. The funds raised were intended to cover the costs of medications, therapy sessions, and other medical needs. The donations are for providing substantial financial aid for the father’s ongoing treatment, especially physiotherapy.
On the day of the event, a large crowd assembled in Othaya to show their support. Well-wishers traveled from various parts of the country, arriving in hired matatus and bodabodas. The gathering was not only a show of solidarity but also an opportunity for the community to meet Kaluma and his father in person. Attendees brought various donations, including foodstuffs, medical supplies, and other necessary items to ease the family’s daily burden. A notable contribution was a special bed donated aimed at aiding Kaluma’s father’s recovery.
The event also saw the attendance of several notable figures. TikTok personalities such as MC Chris Kirubi interacted with Kaluma’s father, witnessing his ongoing health struggles firsthand. The emotional event left Kaluma’s mother in tears as she thanked attendees for their generosity.
Politicians have also acknowledged the significance of the initiative. Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria commended the youth-led mobilization, stating that it reflects a new wave of civic engagement and solidarity among young Kenyans.
