NAIROBI, Kenya — The newsroom is headed for a shake-up.
The Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) has officially dropped the mic—and the full list of validly nominated candidates—for its upcoming elections scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025.
And in a twist that could rival any newsroom drama, the presidential race features two titans of Kenyan journalism: incumbent Zubeidah Kananu and challenger Yvonne Okwara.
If there was ever a moment to grab popcorn, this is it.
Presidential Face-Off: Kananu vs. Okwara
It’s a heavyweight showdown.
Zubeidah Kananu, the first woman to lead KEG and a familiar face in Kenyan journalism circles, is seeking another term at the top.
But standing in her way is Citizen TV’s Yvonne Okwara—equally seasoned, sharp, and ready to make her case to the Guild.
In a statement released by KEG, Returning Officer Advocate Sophie Kaibiria confirmed that all nominations were vetted according to the Guild’s Constitution and its updated Elections Policy Guidelines dated March 3, 2025.
This presidential duel is already being billed as one of the most closely watched contests in the Guild’s history—and not just because of the names on the ballot. It’s a defining moment for the future of Kenya’s editorial direction.
The Unopposed and the Contested
While the top seat is up for grabs, several others are already locked down.
Francis Openda of Radio Africa Group has secured the Vice President position unopposed. Ditto for Linda Bach (Print Media), Kenfrey Kiberenge (Online Media), and Millicent Awuor (Television), who have been declared Council Members without a contest.
But not every seat slid into place quietly.
The Radio category will see a showdown between Toepista Nabusoba and Agnes Mwangangi, while the Academia seat pits Nathan Nayere Masambu against Julius Ombui Bosire.
For the Trustee roles, Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a were validly nominated and have been confirmed elected.
Under Section 4.3 of the KEG Election Guidelines, unopposed candidates are declared duly elected—no need for votes when the race is a solo run.
Countdown to April 12: Let the Campaigns Begin
With the list now official, campaign season is live—and ticking.
Candidates have until midnight, April 11, 2025, to pitch their visions, rally supporters, and (hopefully) play nice. KEG has emphasized strict adherence to its Elections Code of Ethics throughout the campaign window.
The stakes? Beyond individual titles, this election will help steer the direction of Kenya’s editorial standards and press freedom debates at a time when the media industry is navigating everything from digital disruption to political pressure.
KEG has urged its members to participate fully, reminding everyone that integrity, professionalism, and respect aren’t just buzzwords—they’re the pillars of the Guild’s mission.
A Defining Moment for Kenya’s Media Landscap
This isn’t just about picking a president. It’s about deciding the tone, direction, and priorities of Kenya’s editorial leadership for the years ahead.
Whether you’re Team Zubeidah or Team Yvonne—or just hoping for a good clean race—the coming week will be one for the books.
