NAIROBI, Kenya – Independent Party KANU has distanced its party leader, Gideon Moi, from claims suggesting he is aligning with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration, dismissing a viral video as misleading and deliberately manipulated.
In a statement issued Thursday, the independence-era party clarified that Moi, a former Baringo Senator, has “neither the desire nor the inclination” to support the current regime.
“Our attention has been drawn to a misleading video clip that has resurfaced on social media, falsely suggesting that Hon. Gideon Moi is currently aligning himself with the current regime,” the party stated. “We wish to set the record straight.”

According to Kanu, the video being circulated was taken out of context and is part of a “deliberate misinformation campaign.”
The footage in question was recorded during the 2021 funeral of prominent political figure Hosea Kiplagat but is now being misrepresented with false subtitles to imply a political endorsement.
“The calculated timing of this shallow and futile misinformation campaign is telling,” Kanu added, noting the clip re-emerged at a time when the government is “rapidly losing public trust.”
The party emphasized that any decisions on political coalitions must be approved through formal party channels, and no such move has been made.
“Fundamental decisions about political alliances are sanctioned through structured party processes,” the statement said. “Until then, Hon. Moi remains firmly in his position and has not expressed any support for the current government.”
The clarification comes amid a period of heightened political speculation, as opposition and ruling party dynamics continue to shift following widespread anti-government protests and ongoing public dissatisfaction over economic reforms.
