KDF To Construct Proposed 10,000 Seater Wajir Stadium

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will construct a proposed 10,000-seater stadium in Wajir County after the Ministry of Defence agreed to implement the project in partnership with the county government.

The project was confirmed following a meeting held on Tuesday morning at Defence Headquarters between Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi.

According to the Principal Secretary, Department of Defence, construction works will begin immediately, with the facility to be implemented directly through the Ministry of Defence using KDF engineering capacity.

“This morning at Defence Headquarters, I hosted Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and his team for discussions on the proposed construction of the Wajir Stadium. The stadium will be implemented by the Ministry of Defence through KDF. Work starts immediately,” Dr Mariru said in a statement.

The proposed stadium will have a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators and is designed to meet modern sporting standards.

Planned facilities include a football pitch, an eight-lane running track, changing rooms, VIP lounges, spectator ablution blocks, equipment storage areas, parking spaces, a borehole, and a perimeter wall.

The project forms part of broader government efforts to expand sports infrastructure in historically underserved regions while leveraging KDF’s technical expertise in public works delivery.

Governor Abdullahi welcomed the collaboration, saying the stadium would play a critical role in nurturing talent, promoting youth engagement, and positioning Wajir as a hub for sporting and social events in northern Kenya.

Officials said the use of KDF in the project is expected to enhance efficiency, cost control, and timely completion, building on the military’s growing role in delivering strategic national infrastructure.

The meeting was attended by Assistant Chief of Defence Forces for Personnel and Logistics, Major General Edward Rugendo, alongside senior officers from the Ministry of Defence and officials from the Wajir County Government.

Once completed, the stadium is expected to support athletics, football, and community events, while contributing to social cohesion and economic activity in the county.
