NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has been recognized for its leadership in digital transformation, clinching the Best Public Sector Digital Innovation in Energy & ICT Award at the 2025 Digital Transformation Public Sector Awards (DTPS).
The award highlights KenGen’s pioneering use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance efficiency and sustainability in geothermal power generation.
The project, which integrates smart sensors and real-time data analytics, has significantly improved predictive maintenance, reduced operational downtime, and optimized overall power plant performance.
KenGen’s General Manager for ICT, Ahmed Isaack, received the award at a high-profile event attended by ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui, and over 400 technology and public sector leaders.
Speaking at the event, Isaack emphasized the role of digital transformation in securing Kenya’s renewable energy future.
“This award reaffirms KenGen’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable energy. By integrating IoT into our geothermal plants, we are enhancing efficiency, improving predictive maintenance, and ensuring cost-effectiveness. This is a game-changer for the energy sector,” he said.
KenGen’s IoT-driven system enables real-time monitoring of geothermal operations, allowing for early detection of faults and automated maintenance scheduling—key to ensuring uninterrupted power supply.
The initiative aligns with the company’s G2G 10-year strategy, which prioritizes digital transformation and the expansion of Kenya’s renewable energy capacity.
During a panel discussion on data security in the public sector, Isaack also shed light on the cybersecurity risks facing energy infrastructure, noting that critical systems are frequent targets of cyber threats.
“Cybersecurity is a continuous process, not a one-time solution. Attackers often exploit human vulnerabilities as entry points. At KenGen, we have a dedicated Information Security framework that constantly evolves to safeguard both enterprise IT and plant control systems,” he explained.
KenGen has implemented robust cybersecurity measures, including staff training, regular security updates, and an enterprise-wide awareness program to strengthen digital resilience.
The DTPS Awards recognize public sector organizations that have effectively leveraged technology to enhance service delivery, transparency, and efficiency.
KenGen’s recognition reinforces its position as a leader in technological innovation within Kenya’s energy sector.
With an installed generation capacity of 1,785MW, KenGen produces over 93% of its power from renewable sources, including geothermal, hydro, and wind energy.
The company continues to integrate cutting-edge technologies to drive sustainability and meet the country’s growing energy demands.
Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) is the leading electricity producer in East Africa, commanding over 60% of Kenya’s installed generation capacity.
The company is committed to safe, reliable, and sustainable power generation, with a focus on expanding Kenya’s green energy portfolio.
