NAIROBI, Kenya— The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced an international open tender inviting eligible Chinese contractors to submit prequalification applications for a major infrastructure upgrade: the Capacity Enhancement of Pangani – Muthaiga – Kiambu – Ndumberi (B32) Road and Adjacent Road Network.
The project, financed by the Chinese government vide the China EXIM Bank, aims to decongest key traffic corridors in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
According to KENHA, once commercial agreements are finalized, the selected contractor will implement the project under the FIDIC Silver Book Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract model.
The works will involve upgrading the existing two-lane single carriageway to a four-lane dual carriageway, complete with two-lane service roads and pedestrian walkways.
Additional components include new interchanges at Kamiti, Banana, and Northern Bypass roads, as well as construction of multiple bridges and footbridges.
KeNHA notes that the project will not only ease traffic congestion along Kiambu Road and Thika Superhighway but also improve safety, cut travel time, and stimulate economic growth in the region.
“The project will transform traffic flow in the Eastern part of the Nairobi Metropolis,” KeNHA said in a statement.
“It will also improve accessibility and road safety while supporting urban mobility.”
Prequalification is open to eligible Chinese firms or consortia led by Chinese enterprises. Interested applicants must demonstrate a minimum annual construction turnover of USD 250 million (Sh32.3 billion) over the last five years.
Both individual firms and joint ventures are allowed.
The authoritu noted that submissions must be delivered by Friday, August 22, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. East African Time to KeNHA’s Nairobi office.
Tenders will be opened immediately thereafter.
