Flood Death Toll Hits 49 as Police Intensify Rescue Operations Across Kenya

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — At least 49 people have died, and 2,624 families have been displaced following heavy rains and flooding affecting several parts of the country, the National Police Service (NPS) said Tuesday.

In an update issued from its headquarters, the police said officers remain deployed alongside other government agencies to conduct search and rescue operations, evacuate residents from high-risk areas, and maintain security in affected regions.

The flooding, triggered by intense rainfall that began on Friday, March 6, has particularly impacted parts of Nairobi and other counties across the country.

“The National Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones during this difficult period,” NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said in the statement.

Thousands displaced

Authorities said the floods have displaced 2,624 households, forcing many residents to seek temporary shelter as waters inundated homes and neighbourhoods.

Beyond the humanitarian impact, the disaster has also affected key public infrastructure.

According to the police update, 16 police stations across the country have been damaged by the floods, disrupting normal operations in some areas.

Despite the damage, the NPS said measures have been put in place to ensure continuity of policing services and public safety.

“Our officers, in collaboration with other multi-agency response teams, remain actively deployed on the ground,” the statement said.

“These joint operations are focused on conducting search and rescue missions, evacuating residents in vulnerable areas, and providing security.”

Public urged to remain cautious

Authorities have urged Kenyans to remain vigilant as the heavy rains continue.

The police advised the public to follow safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other government agencies monitoring the weather situation.

Residents were also asked to report emergencies or distress situations through the toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112, or via the #FichuaKwaDCI platform.

Continuing response efforts

The latest update comes as emergency teams intensify operations to rescue stranded residents and assess the extent of damage caused by the floods.

Police said multi-agency teams will continue supporting affected communities while monitoring areas prone to flooding.

“The National Police Service remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting and serving the public,” the statement said.
