NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of intensified rains across several parts of the country between October 23rd and 30th, 2025.
According to the advisory, rainfall currently affecting the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley is expected to increase in intensity — exceeding 30mm within 24 hours — and spread to the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi) and South-Eastern Lowlands starting Thursday, 23rd October 2025.
The Department further noted that the heavy rains will likely continue and extend to parts of the North-Eastern region from 30th October, signalling the onset of the 2025 October–November–December (OND) Short Rains across many areas of the country
Counties expected to experience the heaviest downpours include Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu.
The advisory also lists Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Wajir, Isiolo, Mandera, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Machakos, Kajiado, and Makueni as areas of concern.
Residents in affected counties are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to minimize risks associated with the anticipated weather conditions. The Department advised the public to:
- Stay alert for possible floods and landslides, especially in flood-prone and hilly areas.
- Avoid walking or driving through moving water, as currents may be stronger than they appear.
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open fields, tall trees, or isolated structures.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to providing continuous weather updates and urged county governments and disaster-response agencies to remain on high alert as the short rains season begins.
