NAIROBI, Kenya — Most parts of Kenya will experience warm and dry weather this week, though residents in the highlands and Rift Valley regions should brace for occasional showers, the Kenya Meteorological Department has said.
The five-day forecast, covering September 12–16, indicates largely sunny conditions countrywide, with scattered rainfall expected in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, and sections of the Rift Valley itself.
Highlands and Rift Valley Showers
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley — which covers Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Murang’a — residents can expect cool mornings starting at 6°C, clearing to sunny spells, with light afternoon showers. Daytime highs could rise to 30°C.
Counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, including Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Nakuru, and Kericho, are forecast to receive intermittent morning rains followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will range between 9°C and 30°C.
Hotter in the North and Coast
North-western regions such as Turkana and Samburu are expected to remain mostly sunny, with occasional brief showers. Daytime highs may reach 36°C, while nighttime lows could dip to 7°C.
In the north-east — covering Marsabit, Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, and Isiolo — hot and dry conditions will dominate, with temperatures climbing to 38°C during the day and dropping to around 14°C at night.
The south-eastern lowlands, including Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, and Kajiado, will also remain largely dry and sunny, with temperatures fluctuating between 9°C and 32°C.
Along the coast, counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale will see sunny days and partly cloudy nights, with highs of about 32°C and lows around 21°C.
Strong Winds Warning
The Met Department has also cautioned residents in coastal regions, the south-eastern lowlands, and parts of northern Kenya to prepare for strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots.
Advisory
“Most parts of the country are likely to be sunny and dry. However, rainfall is expected in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley,” the department said in its weekly notice.
Kenyans are advised to monitor county-specific daily forecasts and take precautions against occasional showers and gusty winds, particularly in vulnerable areas.
