NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Power has announced planned electricity interruptions affecting parts of Nairobi County, Kajiado County, and the Mt Kenya region on Thursday, January 8, 2026, as the utility undertakes scheduled maintenance and network improvement works.
In a public notice, the power distributor stated that the outages will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and are necessary to allow engineers to carry out essential maintenance aimed at improving the reliability and safety of the electricity supply.
In Nairobi County, the interruption will affect parts of Ruaraka. Areas scheduled for the outage include Mathare, Delarue, the Kenya School of Monetary Studies (KSMS), GSU Staff Quarters, and adjacent customers.
Kenya Power said residents and institutions in the area should plan accordingly, as supply will be restored once maintenance works are completed.
In Kajiado County, the outage will affect Loitokitok and the Ex Sultan Hamud 33 feeder. Customers in Sultan Hamud, Emali Town, Pipeline Sultan, Jet Inn, Kibini, Portland Cement, Elerai, Serengei, Mashuru, Ngatu, Emaroro, Olgos and surrounding areas are expected to be without power during the maintenance window.
The region hosts several commercial and industrial users, and Kenya Power advised affected businesses to take precautionary measures to minimise disruption.
The utility also announced interruptions in parts of the Mt Kenya region, covering multiple areas in Nyeri County.
In Chinga and Kagicha, power will be interrupted in areas including Kagicha Market, Chinga Girls, Gathabari Village, Gathanji Village, Gichiche Market, Demka Dairy, Ruruguti Market, Chinga Boys, Gikurwe Market, Kagongo, Major Wachira Farm, Kiinu Market, and neighbouring customers.
Another outage in the Mt Kenya region will affect Baraka Estate, Lusoi Resort, and Karicheni.
Areas expected to experience power cuts include Milimani Primary School, Baredgate Slaughter, Lucy Weru Farm, Murungaru Farm, Karicheni Crushers, Baraka Estate, Kirinyaga Construction, Ma-Store, Karicheni, Thung’are, Lusoi Resort, and adjacent customers.
Kenya Power said such planned interruptions are part of routine system upgrades and preventive maintenance designed to reduce unplanned outages and enhance long-term service delivery.
The company reiterated that power supply will be restored immediately after the works are completed.

The announcement comes amid renewed calls by the utility for customers to remain vigilant and cooperate with its staff during maintenance operations.
Kenya Power has previously reminded the public to allow authorised personnel access to meters, cables, and other installations when required, noting that all staff carry official identification.
