Kenya Set for Hot, Dry Week as Isolated Rains Persist in Select Regions

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Most parts of the country will experience sunny and dry conditions this week, even as isolated rainfall is expected in pockets of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern Lowlands, according to the latest advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).

In its weekly outlook, KMD said daytime temperatures will continue to rise, with several regions projected to exceed 30°C.

These include the Coast, North-eastern and North-western counties, as well as parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, Rift Valley and Western Kenya.

“Daytime temperatures are set to rise above 30°C in the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya, as well as parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, Rift Valley, and Western Kenya,” the forecast noted.

Night-time temperatures, however, could dip below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, the North and Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and areas bordering Mt. Kilimanjaro, signalling significant diurnal temperature variations.

For regions expected to receive rainfall, KMD said the showers will be isolated and short-lived, consistent with the weakening precipitation pattern observed in recent weeks. The rest of the country will remain largely dry, although residents are urged to stay prepared for abrupt weather shifts, especially in highland and Rift Valley areas that typically experience cooler nights.

A review of last week’s weather shows that rainfall amounts continued to decline across the country, with only a few stations reporting notable totals.

The highest seven-day rainfall was 45.9 mm recorded at Kavingo Station in Kitui County. Earlier in the review period, Mruru Station in Taita Taveta registered 37.1 mm — the highest 24-hour rainfall — on November 18.

Temperature extremes also persisted. Mandera recorded a maximum of 37.2°C on November 25, reflecting the continued heat stress in the northern counties. Nyahururu, on the other hand, reported a low of 4.6°C on November 27, maintaining its trend as one of the coldest spots in the country.

The department noted that the general forecast for November 25 to December 1 aligns with seasonal expectations, with dry conditions dominating much of the country while occasional rain falls in highland and lake basin areas.

Residents in areas experiencing high daytime temperatures and cooler nights have been advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and preparing for cold nights, particularly in high-altitude counties.

KMD said it will continue to monitor evolving weather patterns and issue updates as needed, especially as the country transitions toward the end of the short rains season.
