Kenyan Navy’s New Radiology Complex Expands Its Medical Capabilities

Date:

MOMBASA, Kenya – The Kenya Navy Hospital (TKNH) Radiology Complex was officially opened this week at the Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Mombasa.

The event held on Friday, May 16, 2025, was presided over by General Charles Kahariri, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), and Namgya Khampa, the High Commissioner of India to Kenya.

To commemorate the official opening of the state-of-the-art facility with a cutting-edge 128-slice CT scan scanner, the dignitaries unveiled a commemorative plaque during the ceremony.

This was followed by a thorough tour of the facility to observe its extraordinary capabilities.

The facility and the CT scan machine are both donations to the Kenya Defence Forces by the Government of India and are set to enhance the hospital’s capability in providing specialised radiological services to its personnel and families.

What the new facility means to the Kenya Navy

In his address, General Kahariri expressed gratitude to the Indian Government for its continued support, underscoring the strategic and transformative value of the new facility to KDF personnel and their families.

“This facility will significantly augment our medical capacities at the Kenya Navy, ensuring personnel and their dependents receive world-class healthcare,” said General Kahariri.

He also acknowledged the robust bilateral relations between the two nations, noting that the collaboration exemplified the power of diplomacy and strategic alliances in fostering tangible improvements in healthcare and defence cooperation.

“This accomplishment is as a result of a strong and enduring partnership—one grounded in mutual respect, strategic cooperation, and shared aspirations between the Republic of Kenya and the Republic of India,” expressed General Kahariri.

Khampa commended the two countries’ long-standing collaboration, emphasising their common goal of improving and advancing high-quality healthcare as well as their historical relationship.

How India is supporting Kenya’s healthcare sector

She reiterated India’s dedication to aiding Kenya’s development objectives, particularly in the areas of medical care and defence cooperation.

“This initiative is a testament to the historical friendship between India and Kenya. It reflects our shared vision of enhancing defence collaboration and promoting quality healthcare,” affirmed Khampa.

Commander of the Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, lauded the new development, citing its critical role and significant impact on the morale and well-being of the personnel and their families, which directly contributes to operational readiness.

“The impact of this donation on the morale and well-being of our personnel and their families cannot be overstated.

The addition of this facility will further empower accurate and timely diagnosis, which will undoubtedly lead to improved patient outcomes and experiences,” stated Major General Otieno.

The ceremony marked a significant leap in the Kenya Defence Forces’ continued efforts to modernise its infrastructure, particularly in diagnostic and imaging services.
