MOMBASA, Kenya – Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP), Peter Salasya, has ignited a national debate after claiming that unidentified individuals, purporting to be police officers, attempted to arrest him illegally at his hotel residence in Mombasa.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the integrity of law enforcement and provoked accusations that the event could have been stage-managed.
In a statement, Salasya condemned the alleged attempt as “reckless, shameful, and cowardly,” asserting that the individuals involved had no identification, arrest warrants, or valid reason for their actions.
The MP described the event as a “criminal act” disguised as an official police operation and called it an attack not only on him but on Kenya’s democratic processes.
“This was not an arrest. It was a cowardly attempt to intimidate me,” Salasya said. “Who sent these thugs? Who gave the orders to violate my rights? I will not be silenced.”
Salasya, who has recently declared his bid for the presidency in the 2027 general election, further vowed that such tactics would not deter him.

He described the incident as an attempt to prevent his rise and his message of a new, inclusive political movement that rejects corruption, tribalism, and the traditional political elite.
Many Kenyans, however, are skeptical about Salasya’s account, with some suggesting that the incident might have been orchestrated.
Critics have raised questions about whether the attempted arrest was a calculated political move designed to attract sympathy from the public and galvanize support for his presidential campaign.
Others believe that Salasya is a ‘state project’ designed to appeal to disillusioned young voters.
However, Salasya’s claims of police harassment resonate with many, especially those who have been vocal about police brutality and the treatment of opposition figures.
