NAIROBI, Kenya—Wines of South Africa (WoSA) has hosted a tasting showcase in Nairobi,in what it says is anchored on bolstering Kenya’s love for premium wines.
Over the last decade, Kenya has transformed from a modest wine consumer into a market with afinity for high-quality, sophisticated labels.
“We’ve been doing groundwork here for over 10 years,” shared WoSA Africa Market Manager Matome Mbatha warmly.
“Kenya is not just part of our strategy it is our strategic focus.”
Kenya’s wine market is poised for remarkable growth, expected to leap from Sh123.5 billion (USD 950 million) in 2024 to more than Sh195 billion (USD 1.5 billion) by 2030, according to StrategyHelix.
Interestingly, while the volume of wine consumed has remained steady at around 8,000 metric tons annually since 2019, WoSA sees this as a sign that Kenyan consumers are choosing quality over quantity.
The Nairobi event coincided with the 100th anniversary of Pinotage South Africa’s signature grape.
WoSA says it is keen on certification programs, regional partnerships, and alignment with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), all designed to nurture Kenya’s growing wine culture and regional trade ties.
