KFS, Private Sector Firm TAWI Research Begin Talks on Partnership for 15-Billion Tree Initiative

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has opened discussions with TAWI Research Limited on a potential partnership to accelerate the government’s ambitious plan to grow 15 billion trees by 2032.

During a courtesy call at KFS headquarters in Karura, Board Chair Titus Korir commended TAWI for seeking to collaborate on forest conservation and climate-resilience initiatives. Korir noted that large-scale tree growing remains central to Kenya’s climate adaptation efforts.

“Tree growing is the surest way of building the country’s resilience to the adverse effects of climate change,” he said.

TAWI Research CEO Eng. Fred Jura said the company is keen on supporting the national programme through innovations tailored to arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), alongside agroforestry initiatives aimed at strengthening community capacity to adapt to climate shocks.

KFS leadership, represented by Principal Deputy to the Chief Conservator of Forests Dr. Clement Ng’oriareng’, said the Service continues to seek partners to help realise the national target.

He stressed that while KFS provides technical leadership and coordination, the effort cannot succeed without broad public and private sector involvement.

“The task cannot be left to KFS alone—it is a shared responsibility for all citizens,” he said.

The two parties agreed to formalise their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding that will define the specific areas of cooperation.

The engagement forms part of KFS’s wider strategy to mobilise multi-sectoral support for the national tree-growing campaign announced by President William Ruto.
