KIRINYAGA, Kenya – Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has rejected claims that President William Ruto has lost political ground in the Mount Kenya region following reports of defections to the opposition.
Speaking during the opening of the Goat Artificial Insemination (A.I.) Center at Ahiti Ndoba in Mwea Constituency, Waiguru refuted assertions that Ruto’s support was waning in the region.
She highlighted the massive turnout during the President’s visit as evidence of continued strong support from the local population.
“The turnout by people during this visit clearly shows that the President still enjoys support from the people, contrary to claims that the President has lost support or people have decamped to the opposition,” Waiguru said.
Her statement follows remarks by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwah, who also challenged the narrative that Ruto’s influence had waned in Mount Kenya after his fallout with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Ichungwah pointed to Ruto’s recent visit to Maua in Meru County as a sign of the President’s enduring political support in the region, despite the opposition’s claims.
Governor Waiguru emphasized the importance of regional unity in supporting Ruto’s development agenda, asserting that the Mount Kenya region would benefit more from government inclusion than from opposition.
She underscored that performance-based politics will be central to the 2027 elections.
“We will continue to support the President because we know the 2027 politics will be decided purely on performance. Let’s continue to support and work with President Ruto for the sake of development,” Waiguru stated.
Waiguru also took the opportunity to praise the Goat AI Center in Ndomba, describing it as a transformative initiative for the county’s agriculture.
She emphasized that the center’s role in improving goat breeding would help boost food security and provide sustainable livelihoods for local farmers.
“We are particularly honored to host the Goat AI Center at Ndomba, which is not only a great treasure for our county but also a key development milestone for our country. This center is a significant step forward in improving goat production and food security in Kirinyaga County,” the Governor remarked.
