NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has issued a comprehensive list of regulations to guide visitors in national parks, reserves, and sanctuaries ahead of free entry on September 27 to mark World Tourism Day.
In a notice released on Thursday, KWS said the rules are aimed at protecting wildlife, conserving fragile habitats, and ensuring the safety of both visitors and animals.
“As we count down to World Tourism Day on September 27, when Kenyans will enjoy free entry into KWS-managed national parks, reserves, and sanctuaries, we remind all visitors to observe park rules during your visit,” the agency stated.
Among the highlighted rules is the reminder that all KWS parks are plastic-free zones.
Visitors are expected to respect the environment, avoid littering, and keep a safe distance from wildlife.
The agency cautioned that wild animals are unpredictable and close contact could be dangerous.
Key guidelines include:
- No feeding animals: KWS said feeding wildlife disrupts their natural diet and fosters unhealthy dependence on humans.
- Noise control: Visitors are advised to avoid excessive noise, hooting, or sudden movements, as this disturbs animals and inconveniences other tourists.
- Stay in vehicles: Tourists must remain inside their cars except at designated areas, and off-road driving is strictly prohibited due to its damage to ecosystems.
- Speed limits: Vehicles must not exceed 40kph within parks, with violators risking future bans.
- Safe viewing: A minimum distance of 20 meters must be maintained from animals, and vehicles should pull aside to allow others to pass.
- Camping rules: Fires should not be left unattended, and burning objects must be properly disposed of. Overnight stays require prior arrangements.
The agency also urged visitors to respect Kenya’s cultural heritage, advising against photographing local people without consent and calling for modest dress during visits.
Entry will be restricted to 6:00 p.m. unless visitors have permits for overnight camping. Night game drives will only be allowed with prior approval and at a fee.
KWS encouraged tourists to report emergencies or seek assistance via its toll-free line 0800 597 000 or through +254 726 610 509.
