NAIROBI, Kenya– Lake Turkana Wind Power has delivered 1,367 GWh of electricity to Kenya’s national grid in 2024, accounting for 10.89% of the country’s total grid energy supply.
The Independent Power Producer (IPP in its 2024 sustainability report asserted that the move underscores LTWP’s vital role in advancing Kenya’s clean energy agenda and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
“This production represents a gross annual generation capacity of 50.17%,” LTWP stated in its 2024 Sustainability Report.
“By integrating renewable energy into the national grid, we help reduce the country’s carbon footprint and ensure a stable and dependable power supply for Kenyan homes and businesses, aligning with our mission to drive transformative changes by delivering clean and reliable energy.”
Since becoming fully operational in 2018, LTWP has injected over 9.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power into Kenya’s national grid.
During its first six years of operation, the wind farm contributed approximately 12% of all grid energy, with the most recent operational year (March 2024–March 2025) marking a significant contribution of 10.89%.
Operating at one of the highest capacity factors globally for wind farms averaging 54.7% since inception, LTWP says it has maintained consistent performance despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and routine grid curtailments.
In 2024, the wind farm recorded a plant availability rate of 98.03%, allowing for steady energy output from its 356 turbines and reliable dispatch through its Balance of Plant (BoP) system.
The IPP says it is keen on sustaining the country’s green energy revolution.
