NAIROBI, Kenya – A Nairobi-based lawyer has filed a petition seeking the removal of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki from the Roll of Advocates, accusing them of complicity in state-sponsored violence during youth-led protests.
The motion, submitted to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on Monday by advocate Kepha Ojijo, alleges gross misconduct and violations of the Advocates’ Code of Conduct during the pair’s tenure in powerful security positions.
Ojijo argues that Murkomen and Kindiki—both trained lawyers—oversaw police operations that resulted in deaths, injuries, abductions, and enforced disappearances of Gen Z protesters across the country in 2024 and 2025.
“The respondents continue to identify as advocates while overseeing state-sanctioned brutality,” the motion states. “This misleads the public and demeans the integrity of the legal profession.”
The petition further criticizes the two for failing to accept responsibility or show remorse.
Instead, Ojijo says, they publicly defended law enforcement despite mounting evidence of human rights violations.
He is now calling for an urgent Special General Meeting of LSK members to deliberate on the matter and vote on striking the two from the Roll of Advocates.
Alternatively, he wants the case referred to the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal.
“If the respondents wish to engage in politics, they should do so without wearing the hat of advocates,” Ojijo said.
The motion lands amid surging public outrage over the government’s crackdown on youth-led demonstrations, which began in mid-2024 in opposition to new tax proposals and expanded in 2025 into broader protests against corruption and police brutality.
Human rights organisations have accused the state of deploying excessive force, including live ammunition, to disperse peaceful crowds.
At least dozens have been reported dead or missing, according to civil society estimates.
