Madaraka Day: Gor Mahia to Face AFC Leopards in Mashemeji Derby Historic Clash

Date:

HOMA BAY, Kenya – For the first time in recent memory, Kenya’s most storied football rivalry—the Mashemeji Derby—will be played outside Nairobi, as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards prepare to clash at the newly refurbished Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay on Madaraka Day, June 2.

The high-stakes encounter marks the 97th league meeting between the two giants of Kenyan football and promises to be more than just a battle for bragging rights. Kick-off is set for 3:00 PM.

Originally slated for May 11, the derby was postponed due to stadium renovations in the capital, with both Nyayo and Kasarani closed in preparation for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) had suggested Ulinzi Sports Complex as an alternative venue, but Gor Mahia rejected the option, citing concerns over its limited capacity and logistical challenges.

Instead, the club opted for a departure from tradition, choosing Homa Bay’s Raila Odinga Stadium—ushering in a landmark moment as the derby heads west for the first time in the league’s modern era.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for Gor Mahia. With just three games left, the record 21-time champions trail league leaders Kenya Police FC by seven points.

A win against Leopards is a must to keep their fading title hopes alive, while hoping for a Police slip-up against Shabana FC.

The match also marks the second outing for Gor’s new coaching duo—club legend Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno and Michael Nam—who stepped in following the departure of Serbian tactician Sinisa Mihic.

The pair has been tasked with reigniting Sirkal’s championship charge and delivering what would be a record-extending 22nd league title.

Their last derby meeting, a tense goalless draw on March 30 at Nyayo, left fans on edge, reflecting the fierce parity between the two sides.

Historically, Gor Mahia holds the edge with 33 wins, while AFC Leopards have claimed 28 victories; 35 derbies have ended in draws.

For AFC Leopards, whose league campaign has been underwhelming, spoiling Gor’s title ambitions would offer a fitting silver lining to their season—and a chance to light up Madaraka Day with pride.
