NAIROBI, Kenya – A man captured on video brutally assaulting a woman during the Kutit Culture Event at Carnivore Grounds has been arrested and charged, following public outrage that erupted after the footage went viral.
Benard Kipkosgei, popularly known as Pavilion Motiriot, was apprehended by Lang’ata law enforcement officers on Sunday, August 10, after being trailed in a swift police operation.
The widely circulated video showed him repeatedly punching and kicking a defenceless woman during the August 9 incident, prompting nationwide condemnation.
According to police, the victim lost Sh30,000 in cash, her mobile phone, and other valuables during the attack.
Kipkosgei was arraigned on Monday and charged with assault and robbery with violence.
He pleaded not guilty, and the case will be mentioned on August 18.

The arrest comes as Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen raises alarm over a surge in gender-based violence (GBV) cases across the country.
Speaking in Bomet County on Friday, Murkomen said that while police have intensified crackdowns on perpetrators, incidents of rape, defilement, and assault remain worryingly high — particularly in tea-growing regions of the Rift Valley, where many cases go unreported due to family ties between victims and offenders.
“The security teams and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have done a good job to weed out perpetrators, but more needs to be done,” Murkomen said, praising coordination between the police, prosecutors, and courts in ensuring tough bail terms and serious prosecution of sexual offences.
He warned against resolving GBV cases through informal community mechanisms, which he said deny survivors justice.
The CS directed chiefs and assistant chiefs to step up public awareness campaigns and urged citizens to promptly report such incidents.
“Sensitisation will remain a top priority in the counties. We need everyone to work with the police to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice,” Murkomen said.
