Matiang’i Blasts Use of Religion in Politics, Calls It a ‘Circus of Lies’

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has condemned the increasing use of religion as a campaign tool in Kenyan politics, branding it a “circus of lies” meant to manipulate voters.

In an interview on Kameme FM on Monday, the 2027 presidential hopeful said Kenyans must stop being swayed by politicians who weaponize religion to win public sympathy.

“Wakati wa uchaguzi, hayo ni maneno tulikuwa tunaona wakati ule wa 2022. Ni hiyo mzunguko wa uongo. Sarakasi tu,” Matiang’i said.

He criticised leaders who, during election seasons, suddenly adopt overtly religious personas, often seen carrying oversized Bibles and singing church hymns to appeal to voters.

“Watu wanabeba Biblia kubwa inaweza kukuangusha chini… Wakiitwa wanaanza kuimba, ‘Ngai wakwa, Ngai wakwa eh.’”

Call for Accountability and Integrity

Matiang’i urged voters to look beyond theatrics and assess the integrity of those seeking office.

He said Kenyans should demand sincerity and reject leaders who substitute genuine service for performance.

“Watu hawaulizi, huyu muungwana haya mambo tunaambiwa hii, ni ukweli?”

He positioned himself as a reform-focused candidate, committed to ending the political showmanship and prioritising delivery over drama.

“What this country needs is trust in leadership and honesty in the delivery of services,” Matiang’i said. “I am about better and honest management of our country. When we wake up in the morning, let’s deliver to the people.”

Critique of Public Service Management

The former CS also decried the politicization of public service, which he said has derailed progress and weakened institutions.

“Half of our problems have nothing to do with budgets or resources, but with poor decisions and mismanagement,” he stated. “The real issue is not money—it’s leadership.”

Matiang’i said Kenya is ripe for a new chapter where leaders are judged by outcomes rather than theatrics.

“I believe Kenyans are tired of the drama,” he concluded. “It’s time to get some work done — and honestly, I’m the guy to do it.”

His remarks come as the political season intensifies, with several opposition leaders — including Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Rigathi Gachagua — eyeing alliances to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
