NAIROBI, Kenya — The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has issued a stern warning against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his public attack on Citizen TV journalist Stephen Letoo.
On 3 December 2025, Gachagua labelled Letoo “the worst journalist” and accused him of bias, demanding that Royal Media Services dismiss him.
The Media Council described the remarks as reckless and dangerous, warning that targeting individual journalists puts their safety and lives at risk.
“In a climate already fraught with insecurity at political rallies, church gatherings, and public events, singling out a journalist by name constitutes incitement and places him in grave personal danger,” MCK stated in a press release.
Attacking journalists endangers their lives and undermines press freedom.
With Kenya gearing up for the 2027 General Election, MCK emphasized the crucial role of the media in scrutinizing leaders, examining their records, and reporting facts without fear or favour.
The council reminded Gachagua and all political actors that media freedom and journalists’ safety are protected under Article 34 of the Constitution.
The council called on leaders to stop targeting or threatening journalists and urged law-enforcement agencies to ensure adequate protection for media personnel facing growing risks while performing their duties.
“The media will not be silenced by intimidation. Those seeking public office must accept scrutiny rather than attempt to suppress it,” the statement read.
MCK’s warning highlights ongoing tensions between political figures and the press as Kenya heads into a sensitive election period.
